Tanzania’s football powerhouse, Young Africans SC (Yanga), have embarked on a new chapter after officially naming Portuguese tactician Pedro Valdemar Soares Gonçalves as their new head coach, succeeding Romain Folz. The announcement came on October 25, 2025, just hours after Yanga’s 2–0 victory over Silver Strikers of Malawi secured their place in the CAF Champions League group stages.

The move signals a fresh beginning for the reigning Tanzania Mainland Premier League champions as they aim to strengthen their dominance both domestically and on the continental stage.

A Proven Winner in African Football
Gonçalves arrives in Dar es Salaam with a sterling reputation across African football, best remembered for leading Angola to the quarterfinals of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) — their first-ever knockout win after defeating Namibia 3–0 in the Round of 16.

During his six-year reign as Angola’s head coach, he registered 24 wins — more than any coach in the country’s history — and topped a competitive AFCON group featuring Algeria, Burkina Faso, and Mauritania. In 2024, he guided Angola to COSAFA Cup glory with a 5–0 demolition of Namibia and famously ended Ghana’s 24-year unbeaten home record in competitive matches. These feats established him as one of Africa’s most tactically astute and respected managers.

From Lisbon’s Youth Academies to African Glory
Born in Lisbon on 7 February 1976, Gonçalves began coaching at just 21 with Amora FC, before joining Cova da Piedade and later Sporting Clube de Portugal in 2000 — a club renowned for developing world-class talent. Over more than a decade at Sporting, he served as a scout and youth coach, helping nurture several future Portuguese internationals.

This grounding in player development shaped his coaching identity — methodical, analytical, and focused on long-term growth. After moving to Angola in 2015 to work with Primeiro de Agosto, Gonçalves progressed through the national youth setups, guiding the U-17s to a COSAFA title and a bronze medal at the U-17 AFCON. His success led to promotion as senior national team coach, where he rebuilt Angola into a competitive force.

Raising Yanga’s Game on All Fronts
Yanga president Hersi Said praised Gonçalves as a “coach of great quality and vast experience” who will elevate the club’s performance in CAF competitions. The Portuguese will be supported by compatriots Filipe Pedro (assistant coach) and Fernando Perreira (goalkeeping coach), forming a dynamic technical unit to instill tactical discipline and professional standards.

His arrival also presents an exciting opportunity for players like Kenyan midfielder Duke Abuya, who is expected to thrive under Gonçalves’s mentorship. Known for unlocking potential and improving consistency, the coach’s player-centered approach could help Yanga’s emerging stars reach new heights.

Blending European Structure with African Creativity
Gonçalves’s football philosophy emphasizes tactical balance, defensive organization, and intelligent transitions — blending European precision with African flair. His teams play with discipline, yet maintain creativity through dynamic midfield movement and cohesive teamwork.

For Yanga, this represents an evolution in playing style — one that seeks to dominate possession while remaining dangerous in transition. With the CAF Champions League group stage ahead, optimism is surging in Dar es Salaam. For Pedro Gonçalves, Yanga SC is more than his next job — it is a canvas for combining European structure with African spirit, and perhaps, the start of another golden chapter in his African coaching journey.
