Lawmakers in Dodoma on Thursday 13, 2025, expressed broad support for the appointment of Dr. Mwigulu Lameck Nchemba as Tanzania’s new Prime Minister, commending his integrity, accessibility, and record of hard work.
The announcement was made by Speaker of the 13th Parliament, Mussa Azzan Zungu, who formally read President Samia Suluhu Hassan’s nomination letter — delivered to Parliament by the President’s aide — before opening the floor for MPs to debate the proposal.
President Samia nominated Dr. Nchemba, the Member of Parliament for Iramba Magharibi, to serve as the Prime Minister for the 2025–2030 term. If endorsed, he becomes Tanzania’s 12th Prime Minister since Independence.
Ado Shaibu, the MP for Tunduru Kaskazini, was among the first to rise in support of the motion, describing Dr. Nchemba as a hardworking and reliable leader.
“I stand to support the motion proposing the appointment of Hon. Mwigulu Nchemba as Prime Minister of the United Republic of Tanzania,” Shaibu said. “Although it is difficult to know all the reasons that led the President to nominate him, I am certain of one thing — Hon. Mwigulu Nchemba is a hardworking person. For us in the minority, our support today is a loan of faith, with the assurance that he will deliver.”
Shaibu also urged the incoming Prime Minister to strengthen democracy and ensure equitable use of national resources.
“We trust that Hon. Mwigulu Nchemba will oversee government operations responsibly, ensuring national resources are used for citizens’ development,” he added. “We also believe he will steer the process toward a new Constitution, especially since political affairs fall under the Prime Minister’s Office.”
Other MPs emphasized Nchemba’s personal qualities and accessibility. Anne Malecela, MP for Same Mashariki, described him as a leader who remains close to citizens.
“The key strength of Hon. Mwigulu Nchemba, who is now becoming our Prime Minister, is that he is approachable,” Malecela said. “There are ministers who are difficult to reach, but this incoming Prime Minister is someone whose home feels like home to everyone.”
George Simbachawene, MP for Kibakwe, highlighted Nchemba’s humility.
“What you see on Mwigulu Nchemba’s face is what is in his heart,” he said. “Anyone who meets him feels they are speaking to a humble person. He is not proud or arrogant.”
William Lukuvi, MP for Isimani, praised Nchemba’s patience and resilience in politics.
“Those of us who have been in Parliament for long know the patience Hon. Mwigulu has,” Lukuvi noted. “Despite facing many challenges and criticism, he has never wavered.”
The mood in Parliament was largely supportive, with many MPs describing the nomination as a continuation of President Samia’s commitment to strong and inclusive governance.
While the government had not yet released details on when Dr. Nchemba would be sworn in, lawmakers expressed optimism that his leadership would focus on national unity and service delivery in the years ahead.
