Dar es Salaam, Tanzania — Simba SC have qualified for the CAF Champions League group stage after a goalless draw with Nsingizini Hotspurs of Eswatini in the second leg of the second qualifying round at Benjamin Mkapa Stadium on 26 October.
The 0–0 result confirmed a 3–0 aggregate victory for Simba, following their decisive 3–0 win in the first leg in Eswatini on 19 October. In that away fixture, central defender Willison Nangu opened the scoring in the 46th minute, and substitute Kibu Dennis added two late goals in the 83rd and 89th minutes to secure the advantage that proved vital in Dar es Salaam.
Coach Dimitar Pantev said he had ensured his team produced a strong result away from home, which allowed them to approach the return fixture with confidence. The tactical plan, he indicated, achieved its aim as Simba progressed to the group stage.
Tactical Discipline Seals Qualification
Simba began the match without a natural striker for the first time this season. Early in the second half, Pantev introduced Steven Mukwala and Jonathan Sowah, replacing Morrice Abraham and Jean Charles Ahoua, in an attempt to add attacking impetus. Despite those changes, the new forwards were unable to breach a disciplined Nsingizini defence, which showed greater caution than in the first-leg game.
The opening period was characterised by midfield battles rather than clear chances. Nsingizini produced a notable attack in the 27th minute, only for Simba goalkeeper Yakub Seleman to leap and palm the attempt away for a corner. That effort was the only shot on target in the first 45 minutes, though Simba enjoyed superior possession across the opening half.
After the break, Simba continued to press. Elie Mpanzu forced a comfortable save from keeper Thabo Dlamini in the 55th minute, and coach Pantev used five substitutions by the 57th, bringing on Alassane Kante and Neo Maema alongside Mukwala and Sowah to bolster midfield control and attacking options and to switch to a two-striker approach.
singizini threatened again in the 64th minute when Joel Madondo’s free kick struck the crossbar. The visitors mounted another dangerous spell around the 67th minute with shots by Dlamini Sinenkosi and Mavuso Thubelihle blocked by Simba defenders, creating sustained pressure on the home goal. In the 87th minute, Sowah’s attempt beat the goalkeeper but cannoned off the woodwork.
The game finished 0–0, allowing Simba to advance on aggregate thanks to their first-leg advantage.
Tanzania Sets New Continental Record
The qualification marks a significant moment beyond the club: it is the fourth team from Tanzania to reach the group phase of CAF competitions this season — a national record and a first since Tanzanian clubs began participating.
Young Africans (Yanga) and Simba have both reached the CAF Champions League group stage, while Azam FC and Singida Black Stars qualified for the CAF Confederation Cup after recent wins. Tanzania is now the only East African country to have achieved this feat in CAF competitions.
This accomplishment places Tanzania firmly on the African football map and demonstrates the steady progress of its domestic clubs at continental level.
Financial Boost and Rising Reputation
The financial implications are significant. Each club that reaches the CAF Champions League group stage is guaranteed at least USD 700,000 (about TZS 1.7 billion), and each club making the Confederation Cup group phase secures USD 400,000 (about TZS 1 billion) — a welcome boost for the teams and domestic football.
Simba’s run to the group stage continues a strong recent record: this is their sixth appearance in CAF group stages over the past seven seasons, achieved under six different coaches, including Tanzanian coach Juma Mgunda. The club first reached the Champions League groups in 2018–19 under Patrick Aussems and have since established themselves as regular continental contenders.
All four Tanzanian clubs will now await the CAF draw for the group stages, scheduled within the next seven days.
